Chapter Nineteen

Elle

What the hell was she doing?

Elle tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She should go get Travis right now. That was the only reason she was still here, right? Even if they weren’t engaged anymore, it wasn’t like she could just leave him in Alaska to fend for himself.

The man in the forest is not the one who you’ll marry. But you have already met the man you will marry.

She shifted in her seat. It wasn’t the first part of Natasha’s prediction that bothered her. When Travis disappeared, Elle had genuinely believed that once she found him, they could go back to the way things were. But she had realized just how ridiculous that would be to ask of him. To ask of herself.

Elle swallowed. But what about the idea that she had already met the man she was going to marry? Only one person came to mind, and there was no way that could be who Natasha was talking about.

She glanced at Mac. He had been quiet since they had started driving. Had Natasha said something to him after Elle had left? Or had he come to the same conclusion that she had? That the only possibility was impossible at the same time?

The forest fell back from the road as they came into town, the drive back seeming to take almost no time at all. That was one thing Darling had on LA. No traffic.

Elle pulled to a stop in front of the restaurant and turned off the truck.

Mac tore off his seat belt. “Oh, thank God. The bar.”

Elle didn’t move. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. She was confused enough without adding alcohol to the equation. “If we’re both going to drink, maybe I should go park at your shop. Then I can walk back and meet you here.”

He gave her a look. “Why? We can pick up the truck tomorrow.”

She twisted her hands. “You aren’t worried about someone taking it if we leave it here overnight?”

“Spoken like a truck thief,” Mac muttered. “If that was a problem here, do you think everyone would leave their cars unlocked with the keys in them?”

“What about the dog?” Elle pointed at Dickinson, scrambling for another excuse. “Are you sure she’ll be okay? I could take her back to your place first.”

Mac waved his hand. “Couldn’t get rid of her if I tried.”

She fiddled with the keys. “And don’t you think it’s weird that no one is missing a dog?”

“No weirder than the rest of this week. Which is why I need a drink. Let’s go.” He opened the door.

Mac stepped out of the truck and looked back at her. He jerked his thumb towards the restaurant, but Elle shook her head and stayed put.

He glanced up at the gray sky before walking around to the driver’s side and opening the door. “What’s wrong?”

Her throat tightened. She couldn’t tell him the truth. That even though they had gone to Natasha for answers, Elle was more confused than before. “Nothing.
